HP Strays From the Microsoft Track

It’s going to offer North American schools K-12 a $519 box bearing SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop through its resellers.

Novell has collected a repository of 40-odd open source packages on its openSUSE web site that the kids can tap for coursework and teachers can tap for, say, online testing, and administrator for whatever it is administrators do.

It also includes OpenOffice.org, a browser, multimedia tools, e-mail, and collaboration and instant messaging software.

The widget HP is sending in to spar over school districts with that perennial teacher’s pet, Apple, is an AMD-based Compaq dc5850 that usually appears wearing Windows.

HP started preloading SLED on a netbook in April and sells some SLED-based desktops in Latin America, India and Brazil.

The move is part of a larger HP strategy to expand virtualized browsing across select business desktops and its plans to introduce Linux as an operating system choice for business desktop customers.

The offerings are designed for small businesses.

A first-of-a-kind Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solution has been developed with Symantec and Mozilla for HP customers. It uses the standard Firefox release with a Symantec Software Virtualization Solution layer.

As customers surf the web, changes made to the PC are contained in a “virtual layer” separate from the operating system and don’t permanently alter the machine. Users can reset the browser at will, returning the PC to its last-known good state.

Previously offered on the HP Compaq dc7900 Business Desktop PC, this virtual protection tool is supposed to turn up on the HP Compaq dc7500, HP Compaq dc5800, HP Compaq dx2400, HP Compaq dx2450 and HP Compaq dx2390 desktop PCs as well as the SUSE-bound HP Compaq dc5850.

With Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions, HP business customers should get the same security attributes offered by Firefox’ standard version, including instant web site ID, password manager, anti-malware, anti-phishing, one-click private data clearing and pop-up blocking.

According to Ken Berryman, VP, endpoint virtualization at Symantec, “This solution is a key milestone as application virtualization is now mainstream technology that makes PCs more efficient, stable and capable of meeting today’s changing business demands. Delivering application software virtually allows businesses to provide a more productive and less expensive computing experience.”

Firefox for HP Virtual Solution should be available worldwide by end of year at no additional cost on the new business desktop models with the HP Compaq dx2390 available outside the US.

NASSCOM Foundation to Host 3rd National Consultation

NASSCOM Foundation (NF), the CSR arm of NASSCOM, will be hosting its third National Consultation along with its NGO partners. With an over arching theme, ICT for rural Inclusion: Access, Empowerment, Employability, this three day National Consultation aims to discuss and deliberate on enabling rural inclusion, and take stock of the progress made by the various programmes to enhance access, empowerment and employment of the underserved in India. Experts from the industry, academia and grassroots organization will be attending the National Consultation.

Taking forward the theme of ICT for rural Inclusion: Access, Empowerment, Employability: there will be discussions on the role of Mobiles in Development. There will be deliberations on Mobile for Governance services, applications for development and some best in class case studies around some applications. Other sessions will be around a variety of topics which is around skills building for employment using ICT. Focus will be on connecting NGO’s to employability skills training, training for the differently abled, skills imparted for Rural BPO’s and Animation skills training youth and discussions around training for the retail sector.

Apart from these deliberations, there will be training programs for NGO partners on documentation. The objective is to build capacity of the grassroots managers to document their project experience and impacts. The National Consultation will also see participants from corporates who will be presenting their success stories around CSR and the impact that they made through their CSR activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Rufina Fernandes, CEO, NASSCOM Foundation, said, “National Consultation such as these are the best way to gauge if all the hard work and resources are channelised in the right direction. It’s a proven fact that intra-partner relation enhances capacities and capabilities of the NKN centers and helps the centers in becoming self-sustainable in the long run”.

NF is developing a web based application that can be used country wide by the NGO partners of the Nasscom Knowledge Network (NKN) Program. The Software will cover various activities at center so that various reports will be generated by the software. The NKN management system will support two roles: the NGO on the grassroot level who will enter data into the system and ADMIN of the NKN program who will generate reports and statistics dynamically. The NGO will feed in data regarding the centers they are managing which includes students enrolled for different content, their performance during the course and subsequent job status.

This application is believed to provide a NKN Resource section wherein NGOs can download the documents / policies, etc. NASSCOM Foundation will thus be able to get a consolidated view on which content in which centers are being used to impact social development and be able to focus better on the program resources.

Websites log on to green hosting

PUNE: If you belong to the club of netizens, plan to have your own website or genuinely care about the environment, this one's for you. The buzzword in website hosting, green hosting' is making itself felt across the internet circles, albeit in a small way.

Now, the trend has made its way to Pune as well, with the city-based Pune Gourmet Club Association opting for an American green' server to host its recently-launched website. Green hosting refers to hosting one's website on a carbon-neutral server, viz. one whose carbon emissions are offset by the web-hosting company by green activities like planting trees etc or through the purchase of carbon credits.

While an extensive search by TOI threw up only one website that was hosted on a green server, Znet India, one of the country's largest web-hosting companies, has confirmed that they have up to 100 clients who have opted for green hosting.

Speaking to TOI, Munesh Singh, CEO of the Noida-based company, said, "Our contributions have helped towards the purchase of one hectare of land in Noida. Our staff are taking responsibility to grow trees on this land. This is a long-term project and will take twenty years before the forest becomes well-grown. The whole project is expected to sequester some 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide while making a real contribution to wildlife conservation."

And since reducing (or neutralising) one's carbon footprint attracts benefits from the government, green hosting is actually more cost efficient in the long run than conventional hosting.

Closer home, the PGCA decided to go green while launching their website recently. "Our website is hosted on Dream Host, an American server. Dream Host is a totally carbon-neutral server that purchases carbon credits on our behalf. Also, it believes in energy-efficient hardware," said Nilesh Kale, PGCA's web administrator.

Dream Host, in turn, has a green certificate' that says it has offset close to 5,000 tonnes of carbon since April 2007. And, according to Mike S, a member of Dream Host, the server offsets its entire carbon emissions, including the emissions caused by their employees' travel to the workplace!

Speaking to TOI, Zubin Saigal, director of Nettigritty Private Limited, another domestic giant in the world of hosting, confirmed that green hosting is becoming the buzzword in the world of internet. "While end-user knowledge about this is minimal and close to non-existent, it is the responsibility of hosting companies and data centres to endorse the idea and do their bit in moving towards green hosting. Of the few companies that participate in the green initiative, some do it to gain publicity, others to cut costs and some to "make a difference". Either way, its worth it," Saigal said.

Directi, a multinational conglomerate, told TOI that the Green IT' agenda is gaining momentum in India and has already attracted private and government funding.

Bhavin Turakhia, CEO of Directi, added that while the company does not undertake green hosting initiatives of its own, green hosting is sure to become "increasingly popular" among the consumers, as "concern for the environment increases".
BOX 1
So, how does it work?
* When you choose to develop a website, you need a host' to upload your website on the internet
* You pay a certain booking amount to the web host, who, in turn, uses towards some of the money towards environment-friendly activities. The host might purchase carbon credits or plant trees
* In case of carbon credits, there is an international carbon exchange from where these credits can be purchased. The host uses the money to buy these credits, in the form of certificates

* Each purchase' translates into the host giving a certain sum of money to the exchange for tree plantation or other activities that avoid or reduce carbon concentration in the environment. This money is given on behalf of the website owner
* The carbon exchange then facilitates environment-friendly activities through other agencies

BOX 2
Expertspeak
There is little or close to none awareness about green websites' in India, experts say.
Ganesh Natarajan, chairman, Nasscom
"It's premature for carbon footprint measurement in IT or in India because the green movement is just beginning. However, that is one of the objectives of Nasscom's partnership with Cisco for the Green IT initiative to enable clear metrics to be developed that will measure and control the carbon footprint in IT firms as well as all our customer organisations."

Rajiv Chhiber, TERI spokesperson
"TERI can give both an industrial perspective as well as a scientific analysis of the whole clean development mechanism (CDM) situation in India, but not an IT perspective as such. One reason could be that the IT industry is still developing, hence it has to do an indepth perspective into CDM, a system that, in future through IT, stores great financial growth for our country along with a much cleaner environment."

SMBs: What lies ahead in 2009?

Rajeev Mittal, Group Director, Small and Medium Enterprise, Microsoft India

NEW DELHI, INDIA: What are the trends which are going to be the hallmark of the small and medium businesses (SMBs) in the year ahead? How can they best leverage the opportunities which the year will bring their way? The ripple effect of the recession in the US economy is now visible across the globe though the eventual magnitude and duration of the impact is nebulous at the moment but what has become apparent is that as the year draws to an end a significant number of businesses in India especially SMBs will need to realign their priorities so as to stay healthy in the changed economic scenario.

The larger part of the trends in the year 2009 are going to be influenced by the recent economic scenario. Most analysts are unanimous in their belief that All organizations will re-assess their spending in the wake of the global economic crisis. They will modify their IT strategy from a focus on revenue generation/growth to an approach aimed at improving operational efficiencies and cost savings. According to an AMI Partners study, a majority of Small Businesses in India feel that the economy, will have an impact on their business over the next twelve months. Almost 80 percent believe that the local economies will impact their business–with around 60 percent feeling it will have a very strong impact. While a lesser proportion of SBs feel so about the impact of that the global economies Springboard differs here and actually places India among countries which will run a lower risk as far as a significant IT spending slowdown in 2009 is concerned along with China and Vietnam.

Liquidity seems to be the topmost challenge for SMBs going and likely to remain a priority into next year. IDC believes that SMBs are more likely to focus IT investment on tactical projects, which deliver immediate benefits, than strategic projects. Clearly the immediate and near future is the focus of the SMBs –so what are the technology investments which they will be looking at are those which will stand them in good stead at the moment. According to AMI Partners the lease/finance model will also start seeing more adoption

According to Springboard, cost concerns will drive a primary focus on IT infrastructure consolidation among more mature SMBs, especially mid-market organisations. The need for increasing efficiencies will help virtualization emerge as key to data center transformations. With the current times demanding innovation in the area of consolidation virtualization is one vital device which will help SMBs on their quest for optimizing efficiency. Virtualization can help customers dramatically reduce their IT infrastructure costs and enable organizations to save their IT costs through server consolidation, disaster recovery, re-hosting of legacy applications and software test and development. The awareness levels on virtualization amongst SMBs is still at a nascent stage but going forward more SMBs are expected to embrace this technology.

Unified communication solutions will become more adopted and visible in 2009. Growth need for real time collaboration and mobile nature of workforce will give a boost to UC amongst SMBs in India. Communication remains one of the most strategic tools for productivity and managing various stakeholders in the business. As travel expenses and communication costs are trimmed by companies, Unified communication solutions tailored for SMBs will increasingly emerge as "value " and will see strong growth in the upper mid market segment (AMI P). IDC also believes that audio/video/web conferencing categories will have high anticipated growth, while traditional telecom services such as local/long distance will still continue to make up the bulk,

Mobility is already come of age and grow even more in 2009. AMI Partners make an interesting comment on how with employee productivity and wireless connectivity becoming top priority for businesses the adoption of notebooks will increase as compared to desktops. Portable devices such as data capable mobile handsets will also see traction across employee sizes and verticals.

There has been a fairly contained engagement of SMBs in e-commerce in India till now, but going forward, SMBs will leverage Web marketing and online tools, that can help them expand their market reach. E-commerce adoption is also likely to see interest and exploration by SMBs as an added transaction medium, in B2C and exports scenarios.

Parallel growth in e mail volume and electronic will see increased demand for data back-up and storage, buoyed by decreasing hardware prices . Analysts believe that storage requirements will go up in the coming year and will be one of the top drivers for IT investments. While in an increasingly vulnerable social and business environment, businesses will look at making their infrastructures robust and as infallible as it can get as lapse on this front will become an unaffordable risk. AMI Partners places security amongst the fastest growing IT areas for 2009.

Software plus services had come centre stage last year and going ahead cloud computing will acquire greater relevance as businesses look at reducing their CAPEX and the costs involved with implementation and use of technology solutions. Springboard reiterates that cloud computing movement will gain momentum in Asia. Managed services though, according to AMI Partners will not be among the most preferred options by SMBs and spending on them is expected to grow at a slower rate.

The coming year will see a change in the larger paradigms within which SMBs operate - Broader global and local economic and political challenges will lead to a tightening of regulations, compliance leading into mandates for stricter IT governance. The governments are expected to begin to more proactively engage with this businesses , including SMB which is really the backbone of every economy.

The engagement will also scale be in terms of offering easier access to finance and lowering of interest rates. It is imperative on larger IT Vendors to emerge in the role of an advisor to SMBs and hand hold them through the current times on their tryst with information technology. While these businesses look at increasing efficiencies, technology spending may not increase at same pace as prior years, but it will certainly remain a tool more resilient than others to offer the partnership that SMBs seek in tough times.

Web Hosting Expert Derek Vaughan Investigates the Outlook for 2009

December 17, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web hosting expert Derek Vaughan recently spent some time investigating the shape of things to come as far as the web hosting industry is concerned. His conclusion? People in the industry are positive about what’s likely to happen in 2009.

Writing for HostSearch.com, Mr. Vaughan discussed the issue of web hosting in 2009 with a number of key web hosting industry players and those in related industries. Specifically he spoke to Rob Lovell of Parallels, Daniel Foster, co-founder and principal of 34sp.com, Stacy Griggs, Vice President in charge of sales with HostMySite.com, Robert Cassidy, Vice President of Marketing and Product Development of HostMySite.com, and Nils Decker, Chief Marketing Officer with SpamExperts B.V.

Despite “unusual and unpredictable business times”, the web hosting experts Mr. Vaughan spoke to remained “quite upbeat on the prospects for both the website hosting industry as a whole”. Rob Lovell sees web hosting becoming more of a commodity in 2009, suggesting, “The big few really are now established and entrances to the market from Yahoo, Google and Microsoft will impact the lower end of the hosting market considerably.” Daniel Foster on the other hand sees 2009 as potentially “the Year of the Cloud”. “In 2009, I`m sure there will be more buzz about cloud and utility computing,” suggested Mr. Foster, who is also positive about the cloud’s impact on "traditional" hosting companies. “Not everyone has the technical expertise to manage a complex hosting solution so hosts that can provide solutions relevant to their customers should continue to see growth,” he suggested.

As far as the growth of the industry is concerned, 2008 saw a continued trend towards consolidation, and Stacy Griggs thinks that’s not likely to change in 2009. “Companies that were dependent on a low cost of capital will struggle as capital will be tougher to get and a lot more expensive”. In addition, Stacy sees “surprisingly strong” growth in dedicated servers and collocation during the period. His colleague at HostMySite.com, Robert Cassidy, sees “huge upside and opportunity for quality hosting providers in 2009” as customers “continue to come to the web for information, entertainment, purchases and operational efficiency” and come to hosting as an outsourcing opportunity. Meanwhile, based on feedback from customers, Nils Decker sees the importance of virtualization increasing in 2009 and agrees with Daniel Foster’s prediction that cloud computing will “play a vital role”.

Derek Vaughan is a hosting feature writer and consultant for major web hosting companies. His experience includes serving as Vice President of Marketing at HostMySite.com, Vice President of Marketing at Aplus.NET, and as Senior Director at Affinity Internet Inc. Mr. Vaughan has previously worked for the Walt Disney Company on the ESPN and NASCAR brands. Mr. Vaughan is also currently serving on the Advisory Board for HostingCon, the hosting industry's leading trade event. Web Hosting in India

.
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

The scope of hosting services varies widely. The most basic is web page and small-scale file hosting, where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or a Web interface. The files are usually delivered to the Web "as is" or with little processing. Many Internet service providers (ISPs) offer this service free to their subscribers. People can also obtain Web page hosting from other, alternative service providers. Personal web site hosting is typically free, advertisement-sponsored, or cheap. Business web site hosting often has a higher expense.

Single page hosting is generally sufficient only for personal web pages. A complex site calls for a more comprehensive package that provides database support and application development platforms (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, ColdFusion, and ASP.NET). These facilities allow the customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums and content management. For e-commerce, SSL is also highly recommended.

The host may also provide an interface or control panel for managing the Web server and installing scripts as well as other services like e-mail. Some hosts specialize in certain software or services (e.g. e-commerce). They are commonly used

Hosting uptime refers to the percentage of time the host is accessible via the internet. Many providers state that they aim for a 99.9% uptime, but there may be server restarts and planned (or unplanned) maintenance in any hosting environment.

A common claim from the popular hosting providers is '99% or 99.9% server uptime' but this often refers only to a server being powered on and doesn't account for network downtime. Real downtime can potentially be larger than the percentage guaranteed by the provider. Many providers tie uptime and accessibility into their own service level agreement (SLA). SLAs sometimes include refunds or reduced costs if performance goals are not met.

Types of hosting

Internet hosting services can run Web servers; see Internet hosting services.

Hosting services limited to the Web:

Free web hosting service: is free, (sometimes) advertisement-supported web hosting, and is often limited when compared to paid hosting.
Shared web hosting service: one's Web site is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.
Reseller web hosting: allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers' accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a colocated server.
Virtual Dedicated Server: dividing a server into virtual servers, where each user feels like they're on their own dedicated server, but they're actually sharing a server with many other users. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. This is also known as a virtual private server or VPS.
Dedicated hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the box, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated box.
Managed hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server but is not allowed full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.
Colocation web hosting service: similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of the web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client's machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes.
Clustered hosting: having multiple servers hosting the same content for better resource utilization. Clustered Servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting, or creating a scalable web hosting solution.
Grid hosting : this form of distributed hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.
Home server: usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs.
Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user's connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses. A common way to attain a reliable DNS hostname is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.

Some specific types of hosting provided by web host service providers:

File hosting service: hosts files, not web pages
Image hosting service
Video hosting service
Blog hosting service
One-click hosting
Shopping cart software

Web hosting is often provided as part of a general Internet access plan; there are many free and paid providers offering these services.

A customer needs to evaluate the requirements of the application to choose what kind of hosting to use. Such considerations include database server software, scripting software, and operating system. Most hosting providers provide Linux-based web hosting which offers a wide range of different software. A typical configuration for a Linux server is the LAMP platform: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl/Python. The webhosting client may want to have other services, such as email for their business domain, databases or multi-media services for streaming media. A customer may also choose Windows as the hosting platform. The customer still can choose from PHP, Perl, and Python but may also use ASP .Net or Classic ASP.

Web hosting packages often include a Web Content Management System, so the end-user doesn't have to worry about the more technical aspects. These Web Content Management systems are great for the average user, but for those who want more control over their website design, this feature may not be adequate.

Most modern desktop operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) are also capable of running web server software, and thus can be used to host basic websites.

One may also search the Internet to find active webhosting message boards and forums that may provide feedback on what type of webhosting company may suit his/her needs. However some of these message boards and forums will require not only registration, but a paid subscription to be able to access the sections and sub forums with such information.
